Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û Hockey History Like most sports on the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û roster, school hockey at state representative level began as an exchange competition between New South Wales and Queensland teams. This program began in the 1960’s, and involved secondary school students. In 1973, thanks to the foresight of Sandra Sheedy (a past national secretary and secretary of the Victorian Secondary Schools Sports Association), the Schoolgirls National Netball Championship was combined with Schoolgirls Hockey to be called the U16 Hockey/Netball Championships. Mr Theo Leonard, the then Secretary of the Victorian Metropolitan Secondary Schools Sports Association, demonstrated his support for the combined championship by donating the Theo Leonard Trophy to the event. In 1990, the combined championship was disbanded, to allow the formation of separate girl’s hockey and netball national championships. The Australian Schoolboys Hockey Championship began for secondary students in 1978, hosted in Sydney by New South Wales Combined High Schools. 1978 also saw the first boys and girls 12 years and Under Exchange take place. Like the early secondary sport programs, this competition began as an exchange between New South Wales and Queensland, but later expanded to include other states and territories. The Exchange is now known as the 12 years and Under Championship. After a long association, the relationship between Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û Boys and Girls hockey, and Hockey Australia was formalised with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two parties in 2012. The Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û hockey program is now formally acknowledged as an important component of the Hockey Australia development pathway. In 2014, the formerly separate Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û Boys and Girls Hockey Associations amalgamated to form the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û Hockey Association.
